I'VE DECIDED TO STOP SMOKING CIGARETTES!!! Self Improvement Vol. 1. (smack me if you see me smoking one.)

   After far to many years smoking cigarettes, I Aaron Evans Hohwald, for a number of reason's decided tonight and made the agreement with myself that I'm done with these nasty, foul, unhealthy deamons. I just went to Rite Aid and bought my first pack of Nicotine gum. These things have a really bad hold on me but as I continue to re-invent myself this step is a MUST!!!! How can I be the light I long to be if I'm being self destructive at the same time.
   I owe it to my mother who recently had a small stroke and is working to better her life. (Including stopping smoking herself.), I own it to my love Shelby, who's been sick for weeks and I just found out that my smoking is making it worse. I owe it to my friends who have passed away far to young, how can I live my life to the fullest if I'm robbing myself of it at the same time. I owe it to my fans, you all give me so much support and love and I hope to be able to share my gift for years to come. Most of all, I own it to myself, It might take me some time to forgive myself for the neglect I cast upon my body and pray I can undo the damage I've done.

   This Isn't going to be ez but I know I can do it, I HAVE TO DO IT!!!

   So with that, if you see me smoking a cigarette feel free to say something, talk shit, smack me (not to hard), walk away, really do whatever you feel is necessary to show your displeasure with this disgusting habit. It's the #1 thing I hate about myself and It's time I take on Goliath.

Aaron Evans first Columbus show in over 2 years. Benefit concert for Emanuel Martin (Big E) @ Kobo Feb 26th

   It's been a loooooooong time since I've rocked in Columbus. Too long in fact. But that streak is coming to a end. I'm thrilled to announce a special ONE NIGHT PERFORMANCE at Kobo in less than two weeks. It feels like I've grown into a completely different man since I relocated to So Cal and I can't wait to share my growth with my F.A.M., Friends and Fans back home. I was molded by the unparalleled talent within the Bustown music scene and I've been working my ass off to carry forth the legacy out here on the west coast.
   Joining me on the bill are some of my oldest friends from Columbus and a few new comers to mix it up. Apocalypse Inc has blossomed from doing some of there first shows with Dove Ink many moons ago, to a staple in the midwest musical culture. It's been really fun to watch these cats grow and I they tell me they have a special set planed just for this night. I can't wait to see it, it's gonna be dope. Teen Fiction is a group with a good buddy Colin Martin who is a monster on the sax. I literally think he sleeps with it under his pillow at night so he can dream up new rhythmic patterns. I've never seen him play with this group before but just about anything he touches is golden. Rounding out the the bill is Tea Master. Tea Master A.K.A. Shane McPherson is one of my closet friends from highschool. I'm fact, he's the first cat I ever recorded a track with 17 years ago. (Damn, it's been 17 years. That's real). Being that Shane is the worlds biggest hermit he hasn't been on stage for over ten years but I convinced him to come out and kick off the night. Shane has always been to creative for his own good and I just know he's going to pour his whole heart out on stage. The host for evening will be Illogic, if you don't know about all the things me and this cats have done in the past then you need to catch up because we're about to hit you with a whole lot more. He's not slated to perform but don't be shocked if he ends up rocking a few joints throughout the course of the night. In fact, be ready for just about anyone from the Bustown Hip Hop scene to jump on stage. I truly want this to be a good old fashion Dove Ink party and I'm still working some angles.
   Last but certainly not least, this show will be a BENEFIT CONCERT for my brother Emanuel Martin who has past to the other side since I left Columbus. I never got to say goodbye to E and this is my way of showing him that he's never left my or any of our hearts. 50% of the proceed's from the door will be given to his daughter college fund and I'm hoping to make this an annual event. I miss that dude everyday and I'm going to give the performance of a lifetime in his honer. Four years ago, if you stopped me on the streets and informed me that someday I’d be writing for a new age magazine about yoga, I would have laughed at you….hard…really hard. I’m talking about one of those bellowing blahaha’s brought on only by the disbelief that absolute absurdity can breed. In fact, I would have wagered my soul against the most meager reward if only due to how confident I would have been that this moment would never arise. See, in those days I was an alcoholic rock star more concerned with raging into the night than making sure that my mind, body, and soul was properly aligned. Simply put, I wasn’t the type; and any part of me that perhaps once was, had fled from the path I was walking at that point in life long ago. Being brutally honest, I was a lost soul screaming out for salvation. But I guess that’s the most beautiful thing about prayers, mediations, or set intentions, you never know what curveball the universe’s cure may be.    They've kicked in our doors, closed down 90% of our co-op's, ruined live's, eliminated much needed jobs, They've even played dirty and wore the mud as if it was a high fashion item. BUT they haven't broken our resolve. That's right, even in the face of adversity NUG Magazine has continued to put one foot in front of the other and forge onward. We've had to trim down and streamline but we're still delivering much needed information on the ongoing war and presenting articles on some of the most talented people in the culture.
   Speaking of which, talent doesn't even begin to describe this month's featured blower "Marble Slinger". Word's like innovator, dreamer and trail blazer are better suited for this individual. In fact, he's been making so many moves that even since I wrote my article on him, he's re-set the bar a few times over. Just last week he announced that "Degenerate Art" his hard hitting and stellar documentary covering the life span of the entire glass blowing culture will be debuted at SXSW film festival!!! That's Major. (Ohhh and let's not overlook his pipes, easily some of my personal favorites.)
   If your in the So Cal area make sure to grab a copy of the new magazine. "Slinger" is undeniably another master I've been blessed enough to cover and I'm sure our readers will find this an intriguing edition of Perpetual Motion.
   I'm also proud to announce the NUG went totally GREEN this month and is now being printed on 100% recycled paper with soy ink. I'm really excited we're setting this example and hope it inspires others to look at way's they can be more green in their day to day lives.

   So the video samurai I've been working with on my "I've Been Blessed" video had the amazing idea to start a new show featuring So Cal musician's performing organic versions of their material while aboard the San Diego Metro Transit System. It's so dope I decided that I'm going to keep everyone updated on all the new episodes moving forward. Their showcasing a lot of really talented groups coming up in the scene and I know you all like good music so it's time to spill the beans.
   As always, I may be a little biased being that I'm shooting my episode in the next week or two but hey, I'm not one to let any opportunity pass me by. Especially one this fresh.
   The latest group to make an appearance "Todo Mundo" is one I noticed immediately after moving to San Diego as their distinct sound reminds me of a young Manu Chow (click here to here my favorite song of their's "Mr. Bobby"). I don't know much about this group outside of the fact the I love hearing their music drift through the air at festival and farmers markets all over the region.

The Debut of Ecotistic Magazine feat. Vinyaaron (Making Yoga your own) by Aaron Evans ON STANDS NOW!!

   I couldn't be more excited to announce that the debut issue of Ecotistic Magazine is finally floating around the universe. Ecotistic aims to be a alternative outlet for alternative minds. Green Living, Yoga, Healthy life choices, Pets, Music, Art, San Diego Culture and more are in store for this groundbreaking new publication. This is the F.A.M. manifesting the new world we wish to see. We're the new kids on the block of this rapidly expanding industry and we plan to bring our own unique flavor to the mix.
   As for me, I'll be starting off a new series call "Vinyaaron (Making Yoga your own)". My hope's are that this article will show the world that Yoga isn't just for new age types, it's for everyone. I never thought I'd religiously practice Yoga, nor dive deep enough into it that I'd be writing an monthly article about it, BUT that's exactly why I think I'm the perfect man for the job. If I can transform my life and begin to focus on a more positive health lifestyle than anyone can.
   I can't tell you to much about the new publication because, well, it's so brand spanking new I haven't even got to see it yet. Still I can tell you that I know how much love, time and caring went into it inception and I just feel in my heart that the sky is the limit within this spectacular realm me and my fellow artist are jumping into.

"I've Been Blessed" Video Update and behind the scenes photo's

   So a lot of people have been asking about how the video is coming, and when it will be released, so I thought I'd give a little update. After all, it's all of you, that made this such a blessing. To top it off, the new DJ I've been working with Ganzo Bean (You'll be hearing more and more about this cat...) just posted this sick behind the scenes Iphoto pic on his Facebook page so it seemed the right time to let everyone know how the video was progressing.
   After several adventures to the editing lab I was more than confident we had something special on film, but until a few days ago had only scene the individual pieces. So I was greatly anticipating what would happen in the editing process. Editing can make or break a video that same way the mixing of a song can and I was dyeing to see the final result.
   As you can see about we had a separate camera set up for cameos in the back room and I was shocked to see we had over 45 people participate in this section of the shoot. This for me was the hardest part of the editing process as I had to narrow it down to the best 20 to 25 clips. THIS WAS SUPER, DUPER, MEGA, ULTRA, DIFFICULT. I had to cut quite a few people I know personally and that's always is a bummer. I won't dive into details about why anyone didn't make the final cut. I'll just say I tried to keep the cream of the crop quality wise and keep a good balance of diversity in the people I kept.
   The final result leaves me at a loss for words. I have a 99% done version in my hands and I'm going to pick up the final cut tonight with all the logo's and what not. I can't wait to share this with the world. The director Nathaniel Elegino is a genius. I've had a vision for this video in my head ever since I wrote the song 2 years ago and I've been moved to the brink of tears by how wonderful it came out. I don't know if I've ever seen a Hip Hop video ride this lane and I'm proud that this will be the legacy I'll leave behind. The song and video couldn't possible match each other any better. This is already a dream come true. Now come's the leap of faith.
   BUT AARON, WHEN DOES THE VIDEO DROP???
   February 7th is the date folks. Mark your calendar!!!
   But since that's almost two full weeks off I thought it would be fun to do a teaser or two and include some of the footage that didn't make the final cut. Lucky for us Nate had a little extra time and was able to put the teaser together and I hope to have that up this weekend at the latest.
   With that, I'm out. Work to be done. I'm going to give this a bigger promo push than anything else I've ever been a part of and I'll need all of you to help me propel this light as far as we can. The world needs to find a way out of this darkness. I hope in some way this helps us do that.

"Jazz Is Freedom" crosses 5000 plays and is picking up steam. (Aaron Evans/DJ Deprave)

   Six months ago when we dropped this single I really had no idea how the world would react. I was digging the video supplied by the F.A.M. over at Live Free Productions but in todays Hip Hop market releasing a single with a laid back jazzy vibe and no hook seemed like a risky move. Not to mention it was the first time I used my real name in a public offering. But hey, like the song says "Keep faith in fate, even when fates late" and that's kinda how this one has evolved. It came out to pretty solid hits at the start but then cooled off for a bit. Now it's moving full stream ahead again and gaining strength with each step. I'm hoping that with all the new material on the way it only helps this song grow to it's full potential and you know what. I have faith it will. 5000 hits is nothing to smirk at and in the long run I know with all your support it will soar to higher and higher heights.

   Stay tuned in, I've been saying we're going to shift the earth in 2012 and the years just getting started. Sooooo much fun is on the way...

Aaron Evans to Host the first ever Hip Hop Roots SD this Friday Jan. 20th

Looks like we have another fun filled week of Art, Music, Articles and Shows.

I'm honored to host the first ever Hip Hop Roots SD. For those who may not be hip, Hip Hop Roots is the longest running Hip Hop night in Las Vegas run by my dude HighDro. I really think them expanding to SD is good look for everyone involved. HighDro brings in a lot of dope acts to the region and hopefully this will mean more and more top shelf artist floating over to our fine city. For this debut edition we have a mixed bag of local veterans and out of town microphone heathens. This evening will be jam packed with talent as Broken Dreams, Six9teen, Purplebrown, Infusion Project, Day-Go Produce, DJ L, DJ Deprave and many others bless the stage.

So come out, have some fun, have a drink, buy something or trade something at the swap meet. Who knows I might even rock a few joints if the sprit moves me... ;)

After the immensely successful "I've Been Blessed" video shoot, I decided to jump on this All-Star line up next week and rock a few songs. I tell you, It's hard to pass up the chance to share the stage with the biggest names in So. Cal. Hip Hop. Even if I'm not really one that enjoys playing in "Showcases", with this roster it's an honer just to be invited to be a part of the event. I'll only be rocking 2 or 3 songs so get there early and enjoy this FREE night of home grown Hip Hop. I don't think there's a weak link in this chain and I've never got to check out Aceyalone live so I'm excited to see what he brings to the table.

After 10 years of spinning wax, producing hits, touring, recording and promoting for some of the most talented names in underground Hip Hop the time has come for me to step forward alone and use my own voice as an artist. It's just me this time around and moving into 2012 I feel the best theme to lead with is to remind myself and all my amazing supporters just how blessed we each are. The time is now to be the change we wish to see in our world and I'm ecstatic to have this opportunity to share my heart with the world. I plan to lead by example, to inspire with truth and as I set my soul free hopefully set others free at the same time.

I would like to thank all the people who helped me reach this pivotal moment in both my career and life. You can read more about the songs origins in the brand new interview that will be posted on Toke of the Town later today. I'd also like to send a shout out to my NUG F.A.M. for their support with the project and my overall growth.

Since so many people, have blessed me in so many ways, I've decided to make the single FREE until F.A.M. (The full album from which this track is taken) drops in early May. So I'll admit, I don't often frequent Comedy nights and I'm pretty sure that It's my loss. Every time I do decided to venture out to of witness a group of all to self deprecating individuals I end up have a pretty damn good time. I think I can relate to this inner insecurity as the Hip Hop/Music culture is much the same. Overstated, under appreciated and ruthlessly cut throat.

Tonight I went out to check out Tommy Lucero from the NUG F.A.M. and was happy to see him hold it down in a mixed bag of seasoned veterans and somewhat beginner comics. I really enjoyed Tommy's set and found myself laughing so often I almost didn't manage get any steady shots. Almost. Luckily I calmed myself down long enough to snap these amazing photos of him doing his thing on stage. True I may be a bit biest being that I spent the first 28 years of my life running around Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois and just about every other state in the region, but Mid-West cats are just cool, chill, laid-back folks. In fact if it wasn't so damn cold 8 months a year I would have never left, but Cali sunshine and green made me make the jump.
   This months featured blower "Chad G' is the epitome of the Mid-West vibe. In Fact it turns out that I actually meet him at one of my shows while on tour a few years back and got to kick it. They say it's a small world and I think their right. I can't wait to burn one in the future with this dude. Chad definitely has his own style and flavor with his art and I'm really glad I got to give some love to a master from back home.

   The holiday season is upon us once again, so I guess that means it's time to grab a yule time log, kick back with love ones, and GET LIFTED! But this year santa left a special log under my tree courtesy of my mid-west brethren, Mr. Chad G. I've been puffing on his stellar creations non-stop ever since they showed up and now you can check it out in this months NUG Magazine.
   I'm just about settled in to my new home in Ocean Beach and it's due time I catch all you "kind" people up on the newest developments in my life. Be on the lookout for a avalanche of updates over the next few weeks. It may seem like I've been busy this year, but in reality, you haven't seen shit yet. Mark my words, 2012 is going to be my biggest year yet. F.A.M.'s will be dropping in May, new adventures are on the horizon and in all honestly I feel as if 10 years into my artistic career I'm just now hitting my stride.
   As 2011 comes to a close I want to give thanks to all the amazing participants in Perpetual Motion this past year. MAXIMUS, J.A.G., CREEP, JOP, RYNO and CHAD G. When I started this article I never dreamed it would get this big, this fast, and we're caping of the year with one last master artisan.
   So run to your local news stand and grab one of these goodies before there gone. As you can see, Santa like's NUG too and I'm sure any copy's left on stand much longer will be getting jacked and taken back for the elves to check out. (Why you think they where those little green hats, maaaan you have to be high to dress like that...LOL)

An Introductory Photo Shoot with Mr. Nathan Say

   Last summer I was approached by a talented young man named Nathan Say about helping him record his first poetry album "On The Other Side Of Rain". Nathan is a regular at Train Of Thought open mic @ Queen Been's, my home base for all things positive and good here in SD. Needless to say, far before he approached me, he caught my attention. See, Nathan's the type of person the makes his disability's his strength's & approaches his shortcomings as a chance to prove we all can overcome almost any obstacle.
   I'm sure I'll be writing plenty more about this amazing poet between now and May when his album drops, so I'm not going to go into a dissertation about how powerful his words are. (or for that matter even divulge just want my overall role in the project is...I may still have a trick or two up my sleeve that even he doesn't know about.)
   I did however want to post up pictures from the photo session we had today as we begin to prepare for his promo push. I also put together a logo for him. Overall I think we got some great shots for a cloudy morning in O.B. and I think the logos fresh.

I'm catching up with a ton of work after my relocation to Ocean Beach so I'm going to keep this short, BUT I will say this. We are unquestionable under attack from the Federal government here in the San Diego Green Movement. NUG has some great articles this month addressing the subject so on top of the stellar glass I'm here to highlight I also want to encourage everyone to get themselves educated to the current climate in the culture. My new series - What is Hip Hop? "Access Hip Hop" - is now online at NUG Magazine.com (+Bonus Coverage)

This month I'm kick off a new series online with NUG Magazine titled "What Is Hip Hop?" which will focus on covering the ever growing San Diego Hip Hop scene. This city is bubbling over with talent and I'm stoked to see this project moving forward. Its pretty weird covering something I'm so deeply involved with and that's why I ultimately chose to title the piece as a question rather than a statement. I hope to simply show what has drawn me in as both a fan and performer. Hip Hop is broad and vast but so is So Cal., and I find this a perfect place to examine the large scale picture, on a micro level.

For my first installment I chose to cover Access Hip Hop one of my favorite shops in the whole country. I've been to record stores from coast to coast and Access easily is in my all time top 5 spots to cop new vinyl and get updates from around the culture. It's really cool to see everything come full circle as Access was the first store to independently start caring my label Dove Ink's releases all the way back in 2003 when we dropped "Write to Death 1" (Featuring Myself on production and Illogic on vocals) Since those days Access has continuously supported me, my friends, and my label and I'm glad I can help give them some shine on the back end.

Weekly Leak #2 Kaus and Craze Feat. Aaron Evans - "Seeking An Escape" (Portishead Remix)

About a year and a half ago Kaus and Craze asked me to jump on a mixtape they where working on call "Sessions". I had just joined the 2012 Dynasty and really didn't know much about these two or what to expect. I should have known they'd show up with a Portishead track to spit over. No pressure...it's just one of my all time favorite music groups and something I think every Emcee thinks about, but very few take a crack at. After all, if your going to get down with Beth, you better come correct.
This mixtape actually dropped about a year ago but it never went up online and I've always really dug how this track it came out. Truth told, it's one of my favorite verses I've ever wrote. If this happens to waft across the groups ears I can only hope they fell we did it right. (Really if anyone I ever sampled or flipped a remix of, ever heard any of my material, I would want them to feel that way.) I'd say Kaus and Craze each respectful held it down in their own right. These two have not only become two of my closest friends on the west coast but also two of my favorite artist to watch grow and bloom. I'm going to bug them about putting the whole mixtape up and you should too. These cats have a bushel of talent and it's time they took it to Hip Hop's farmers market and cashed it in.

First Photo Shoot with the Canon T3i

Last week I picked up a new hybrid camera so that I could jump back into photography and start making music videos for F.A.M. I was quite a shutter bug when I was in High School and Collage so much that I even had a dark room in my first apartment. A lot has changed since those days in the world of photography, but so have I. For the last 5 years I've worked with Photoshop and my abilities are well beyond the profession bar at this point. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this all progresses. I love new challenges and this new toy has already captivated my imagination.
This weekend I documented my adventures around San Diego as to give camera a good test run and post some pics up for loved ones back home preparing for winters blanket to fall. Hopefully this will warm there hearts a touch.
Anyway here's the first batch I edited it up Sunday night over a few bowls of Mazar O.G. I'm pretty happy with how they turned out given how long I've been away from the medium. Please feel free to leave some feedback. I'd love some input on the adventure. Be Ez and Shine On...

Today is Pit Bull Awareness Day in Balboa Park from 10am-3pm

I'm extremely happy to announce that for one of my upcoming articles in NUG Magazine, I've been given the green light to write a piece on Pit Bulls. 5 years ago I had never been around a Pit, didn't want to be around Pits, and generally was scared to death of the bread. I never really had a reason for this mentality outside of buying into the negative propaganda feed to me by the media and being intimidated by their shear physical presence. Then in 2007 fate tossed me a curve ball and I started dating a girl that owned 3 Pits. Needless to say I went through a real life crash course in the caring for and treatment of this amazing animal and was reborn a genuine Pit Bull lover. Now that I am a part of the media, the tables have been turned. I'm going to dive deep into this subject with intentions of writing a dynamic and hard hitting piece addressing some of the little known facts and misconceptions surround this beloved K9 companion. I'm sickened by the slanderous image Pits have been giving in S.D. and The U.S.A. and this article will be my formal rebuttal.
Today marks the beginning of my research as I set off to checkout "Bark at the Park" a day of Pit Bull appreciation and education taking place in beautiful Balboa Park (at the corner of El Prado and Balboa Ave....just West of the dog park) from 10am to 3pm. At the event you can plan to find Pit Bull rescue organizations for San Diego County and beyond, professional photography for pets and their owners, a chance to interact with certified trainers and behavior experts and even enjoy a Pit Bull costume parade.
If your a Pit Bull, or for that matter Bull Bread lover, than there's no other place you should be today then Balboa park. Word on the net is that a large turnout is expected and I'm excited to meet others who share my admiration for this truly remarkable creature. I'll be taking my new Cannon T3i with me so expect some great photos soon here on the site.

   It's not often in life you laugh so hard you can feel the tears start to ball up in your eyes. When these precious moments do arise, capture them at any cost. At the end of the day, a life lived without laughter, is a life never lived at all. Anyway...Look at me trying to sound all introspective about comedy...lol In all seriousness, it's not good to be serious all the time.
   I want to send a super big shout of to the F.A.M. at NUG LIFE RADIO for having me back on there program last night. Tommy "the Roach" Lucero, Matt Cook Live, Erik "the Joint" Martin, Medicinal Michael and the "The Soundboarderator 9000" have really put together a great show and it's been cool to watch them grow so much, in such a short time. Pop a cork (or better yet pack a bowl) congratulations are in order. I also want to send some love to my dude J.A.G. one of NUG Magazines recently featured glass blowers in Perpetual Motion for making it down to the show. Me and J.A.G. took home the win for the away team in the "Bong Rip Challenge". Strangely I know my mother would be proud. Last but not least, thank you to Slang Media for providing such a nice space to host the show from, it make's more of a difference than people might expect.
   I really enjoyed getting to share my new single "Sink or Swim" with NUG LIFES listeners. It's been getting a lot of spins online and the in studio reaction was about as warm as anyone could ever hope for. I also did a live rendition of "I've Been Blessed" that was very we'll received. I don't think I could have ask for a more enjoyable experience and I can't wait to join these crazy individuals for more on-air antics in the near future.

They say patients is a virtue and I'd have to say their right. It's never easy to wait for something you dream of day in and day out. Watching each individual grain of sand pass within the hour glass as if coated in molasses can test the nerves of even those who seek a personal nirvana. Recently I have had to relearn this lesson once again. I regret to inform my many fans, friends, supporters and most importantly family that I will be pushing the release date of my debut solo album Family Always Matters back till early 2012.

Sometimes in life you just have to admit your trying to fit a square peg into around hole. More or less that's the short and tall of why I'm having to switch up my plans. (The final installment of Sink or Swim which at the moment is still unpublished will explain this further down the line but diving down that rabbit hole is not the point of this update.)

After arriving at this apex I was faced with one of two decisions. A.) Force the album out rushed and unprepared on a time frame that would have been far overtaxing on my personal life and physical wellbeing. or B.) Circle the wagons, reassess my rations and remember theres a reason leaps of faith are called leaps of faith.

I have a lot of exciting things I want to do with this album and I truly feel that I will be able to accomplish far more of my objectives with this project and my career as a whole if I wait just a touch longer to tip this first domino. Don't worry, The ALBUM IS DONE. The design is done, The masting is in the pocket and I'm not having to go through a total overhaul but more an adjustment to my blueprint as far as its release. More or less it comes down to a proper promotion time frame.

What does this mean for YOU the listener? Well.... It means more cool shit for you all down the road. I'm relaunching Dove Ink in celebration of our 10 year anniversary with a new mission statement and much broader scope. I (and possibly some new additions to the team) will be covering infinitely more music and offering far more support to ANYONE we feel is dope and deserving of some shine. I'm returning to my D.I.Y. roots with an aim of bringing you far more interesting and interactive artistic products and events. I'm starting to look at music as more a promotion tool for my overall ideas as an artist and plan to take my brand of unique Hip Hop into uncharted waters boldly and bravely.

Lets just say I don't feel like my career has even started yet or at least I'm moving into a new chapter and have never been more excited to share my ever growing interests and talents with the world. From A to Z if it's artistic in any way shape or form you can expect me to be looking for a way to get my hands involved.

I would like to thank you all for your support up to this point (I try pay it forward everyday...) and ask that you please hang in there with me while I implement plan 2.0. (consider it an upgrade, not a revision) The album is on its way soon, cross my heart. I just want to make sure that it lives up to the bar which Dove Ink has set over the last ten years. (and for that matter, set the bar even higher.)

So I keep saying I'm going to update the site more and It's time I stick to my guns. I have about 9 pots cooking on the stove and the artistic aroma is intoxicating. Last time I was at such an apex in my career I was young, dumb, and drunk. I often say that It's not the mistakes you make in life but what you do on the back end to make up for them. Three and a half years after quitting drinking I can say with confidence that I'm giving 100% to make up for wasted time and energy. I've been given a lot and I'm intent to give it all back ten fold.
I'm using my voice in more ways than I ever imagined and after the success of I Get Lifted last year thing are looking bright moving into F.A.M. this fall. Honestly, I've never felt this much pressure before as an artist. Not to say I'm that under the microscope, but I do feel like there is some expectations about what this album should be. Really, it's just stories of my family in all it's crazy incarnations. You could almost call it a personal journal. It deals with a many topics that I left behind back east and calling it done is certainly pulling at some strings in my heart..but as so many people say now a days... It is what it is.... No turning back now, No apologies, No unchecked regrets.
So with that I'm back to making sure thing happen as they should, those pots arm't going to cook themselves. I'm beyond excited to share this album with you all.... As Davu and Illogic once said... "The Time Is Now"

First and foremost I would like to give a big shout out to Ian Rie, NUG's graphic designer... Every issue just keeps getting slicker and I think this is my favorite yet. I simply love the cover and he killed the layout for Perpetual Motion. Look him up, give him some love, tell him he's doing a great job.

This month's Sink or Swim is called "Constant Elevation". I look at how we must all constantly push ourself's to new highest's if we are to lasso our dreams. A journey into: Beats, Rhymes & Life The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest

One of the best things about living in So Cal. and having connections in L.A. is that seemingly everything happens here (and New York) a few blinks of an eye before the rest of the world. Last week I was lucky enough be asked to attend an opening night shin dig of "Beats, Rhymes & Life The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest" at the L.A. Film School. Located in the heart of Hollywood on the corner of Sunset and Ivar, the films director Michael Rapaport and music supervisor Peanut Butter Wolf where in attendance to partake in a Q & A after the screening which added an additional angle of allure to the evening. Needless to say, I'd been looking forward to the screening since the moment I touched down in the city of angels as I've been an avid Tribe fan since my early teens.

The first time I saw Tribe play was just before their initial break up. Man I'll never forget that day. Michael Franti, Outkast, Fugees, Busta Rhymes, Cypress Hill, Ziggy Marley & ATCQ all graced the stage that afternoon at the inaugural Smoking Grooves Tour and to this day that show would be in my all time top 10 lineups I've ever been blessed enough to witness with my own two eyes.

Ironically it was around this period the films director Mr. Rapaport first had the idea to make a true school musical documentary about a group he and most other hip hop heads world wide (myself included) considered to be The Beatles or Rolling Stones of their respected generation and culture. I agree that the time is looooong past due to start sharing what is now the fully developed and ingrain artistic expression of Hip Hop, born in New York, and brought to the masses world wide. If there was one thing made absolutely clear about this film, it's this: Hip Hop, in no way shape or form, would be where it is today with out there 4 incredibly gifted individuals and their endless contributions pushing the craft forward.

The documentary flows as to be expected, diving deep into the groups roots the film explores the life long friend ship between the two lead vocalists Q-tip & Phife Dog. Seeing them as children in church choir really gives you a sense of just how much a family a music group can be. Anyone who has ever been in a band or hip hop group is sure to be able to relate to the peaks and pits falls that come when brewing a batch of dreams in a collectively run kitchen. (I know I can...) Moving forward the film highlights the addition of Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi White to the fold and helps the viewer understand just how ATCQ sound was fully formed. I never really understood Jarobi's role in the group till seeing this film and hearing about how he was the spiritual and energetic backbone of the group. I think the first half would be my favorite as it focused more on the fun and excitement that goes into making music before all the industry and business angles become involved. The first half also covers the assembly of The Native Tongues one of the cultures biggest and most progressive crews ever. De La Soul, Brand Nubian, Jungle Brothers, Queen Latifah and more teamed with Tribe to help redefine what Hip Hop could be.
The second half of the film takes a darker turn as it looks at the group multiple break up and reunions, Phife's falling health and the ongoing struggle to keep the group as one solid unit. This section was a little hard for me to watch in part because I worked in Kidney Dialysis for a few years and have seen first hand how hard the treatment can be for both the patient and their families. I don't want to say to much about the second half as I feel like this is a side less seen to fans and I'm not trying to spill the beans. But I will say my eye's watered, my head nodded and I had a smile ear to ear by the end of the film.
I won't say this is a masterpiece from a directorial standpoint but it was solid overview of ATQC journeys. As a old school hip hop head and life long tribe fan I couldn't be happier that this film was made and its obvious Mr. Rapaport put his whole heart into making this happen. Peanut Butter Wolf did a great job with the movie score which never made a wrong turn and I can see him playing this role again and again in Hollywood. How dope would it be to see a blockbuster film with him at the musical helm?
If your souls ever grooved to a 4/4 rhythm you should check out Beats, Rhymes & Life The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest. Make sure to catch it on the big screen when it rolls into your city or town, after all who knows when or if the group will ever tour the states again. For anyone thats never got to see them rip a mic this might be a close as you'll ever get to having an all access V.I.P. pass.
Who know what the future holds for these 4 muses who's music has influenced me and my generation more than could ever be put into words. ATCQ has left a footprint that won't be filled anytime soon and every artist should strive to capture the spirit of what they've left behind. I know I do.

Urban Underground Beat Battle Rd. 2 TONIGHT! (I'm judging)

If you've never been to a Hip Hop beat battle, you've been missing out. Dove Ink used to put on a lot of these in Columbus back in the day and I've always had a great time at these events. Maybe it's the emcee in me, maybe it's the producer... but something loves two hip hop heads throwing down with thunderous bass lines and neck snapping snares. Every battle is unique with a smorgasbord of styles and sounds clashing as each producer stakes his claim to be king for a night. Round one of the "Strictly Bussiness" battle here in S.D. was beyond on point, I don't think there was a whack cat in the whole field. If your free tonight come check out how S.D. does it. I'll be in attendance judging the event. Try to get there in time for Generik & Anek, their combination of beat boxing/singing/emceeing is truly entertaining. When I moved to San Diego in late 2009, I knew 2 people in the city. One was a old friend I had meet back during the Everybody's Green tour in 2006 and stayed in touch with over the years. The other was a enigma named DJ Deprave. We meet up the first week I was here and started building on a track immediately, to date its the only track we've made but hey, if you get it right the first time just roll with it right? After spending the last few months having a blast making a video we're finally ready to share this project with the world.

Before the tires even hit the tarmac at San Diego International airport, I was dripping with anticipation over the fact the my lifelong enslavement due to marijuana prohibition was about to end. I wasn't leaving Ohio just to get away from Jack Frosts annual ball, I was ready to be somewhere my medical conditions where recognized and could be treated with my choice of medication, Cannabis. I'll never forget rushing from the doctor after obtaining my medical marijuana card to The Downtown Kush lounge to pick up some top shelf O.G. Kush. Upon walking in the front door something caught me eye immediately, NUG Magazine.... I remember thinking....WHAT!!! S.D. has it own publication covering the MMJ culture... how cool is that? Needless to say the gears kicked into overdrive...

   Now just over a year later I'm excited and proud to debut my two first articles in the June issue of NUG Magazine. If you know me, you know that I'm all about FAM and thats just what I feel I've found over at NUG. Warm smiles and genuine loving hugs have been the standard since step one and I'm bubbling with light over what has already developed between Dove Ink and NUG. I try and keep as much personal stuff off this site as I can but I've had such a wonderful birthday week that I just had to put up a post and say THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to all my wonderful family, friends and fans who sent so much love this way, it was almost overwhelming. Its kinda wild to me that when your growing up being in your 30s seems so old, but now that its here I'm having more fun than ever. Rocking shows, appearing on the radio, writing, modeling & making new art have become a full time job for me at this point and its more than a dream come true. I still have a long way to go and its gonna take focus and grinding it out to get there, but it all seems so close and attainable for the first time ever. I'm on the edge of a cliff about to make yet another huge leap of faith, and I'm sure with all your love and support I'll get there. I hope to let the cat out of the bag this week about some of the big news I've been eluding to. Stay tuned...THIS IS JUST THE START!!!

I've been anticipating this event for weeks now and the moment has finally arrived. I've never been to an show quite like this and I think thats exactly why my seances are so intrigued. It's been my stance for years now that hemp can save the planet, & anything that promotes some of the 8 million uses for this sacred and GOD given plant is going to receive my full support. I'll be making a special guest appearance on the catwalk showing off some super fresh hemp clothing as I stroll across the stage with a little Hip Hop flavor, and I'll be making a special debut of a certain magazines new t-shit design. May 11th Mr. Lif, Aaron Evans, Mr. Ridley w/ Kaus, Sojourn and More!!!

After an absolutely fantastic evening last night at Train of Thought I couldn't be more excited about next weeks show with Mr Lif at The Kava Lounge. For those of you who grew up hip to the now defunct Def Jux record label you know that it was defined by its groundbreaking, energetic compositions & progressive musical stylings. By placing abstract vocal patterns over futuristic boom bap beats Mr Lif and label mates El-P, RJD2, Aesop Rock & Camu Tao (R.I.P.) became household names as they set a bar most underground artist are still trying to clear. Next week Mr. Lif with be blessing San Diego as he graces the stage at Kava for a headline performance at Urban Underground. I've had the pleasure of seeing Lif rock live several times before back in my hometown of Columbus, Ohio and I must say every show has been nothing less than pure lyricism spit with pure passion. Mr. Lif takes Hip Hop back to its roots with true school flavor and triumphant words straight form the heart. On a personal note I'm very interested to see what his energy is like sans his famous trademark dreadlocks, I'm sure it's been a major transition for him and It will be fascinating to see how that manifests itself on stage.

Not to be overlook are next weeks local openers of which I would like to highlight Mr. Ridley from my crew 2012 Dynasty and Sojourn from Future Shock. Me and Ridley meet two years ago over a argument on a local SD message board that ironically ended up turning into a friendship with a strong mutual respect for each others art and willingness to speak our minds freely. Thats the thing about Ridley, what you see is what you get, pure punk rock madness melodically prowling the stage as he dismantles ego's all while searching for the other side of the universe. Joining Mr. Ridley is Kaus who at the tender age of 20 is rising quickly as a new star in the 2012 family. His unmistakeable deep raspy flow and precision patterns have set him apart from the pack as he refines his craft while preparing for a plethora of releases. This duo is not to be missed, trust me I know for a fact that they have at least a trick or two up their sleeves planed for this performance.

Sojourn is the other side of the coin. Hailing from a more soulful, spiritual background Sojourn dives deep into his inner emotions on every track as he reaches out to the audience with classic rhythms and timeless messages. A seasoned veteran on both the mic and behind the boards Sojourn presents a professionalism not often matched in todays watered down music world. Bottom line, this dude is my favorite act in So. Cal. without a doubt. Every time we play together he makes me want to find a way to step up my game just a little bit more which is the highest complement I can give to any fellow artist.

Last but not least, I also will be doing what I do on stage, so if you dig what I do, do yourself a favor and come out and have some fun. This is genuinely a show for heads the love real Hip Hop.

Rounding off the bill is Draycko, Generik & Anek, Darren G, Travisty & Nikki & The Mongoloid.

For as much as I grew up on 808 kick drums, 4x4 rhyme patterns & samples plucked from dusty crates I've also been highly influenced by the Beat Generation and many other classic poets such as Maya Angelou, T.S. Eliott & Khalil Gibran.

Last fall I was lucky enough to play a show and be introduced to Mr. Gill Suto an amazingly talented vocalist and host of San Diego's premier open mic night Train of Thought. I'd been looking for another creative avenue to share my words with the world and the second I walked into T.O.T. a warm familiar feeling fell over me as if I was visit home for the first time in many many moons. I'm honored to say that this coming tuesday 5.3.2011 I will be the featured artist and hope you can make it out for this special performance. Just to wet your appetite I've posted video from last weeks T.O.T., the piece called "Sink or Swim" and is from my new upcoming album F.A.M.

Yesterday in celebration of my favorite holiday I decided to leak a new single off of "Free Green" the new Green Brothers EP due out this summer. This project is a throwback to the original G.B. vibe with its dusty road jazz infused sound and more playful, silly lyrics...Ohh and did I mention it's FREE! (but donations are always wonderful!!!)    So I've worked my fingers past the bone these last 5 days to get the site up to where I would like it to be and It's getting closer and closer with each keystroke. I've added links on the store page to pick up all of my past releases in both physical and downloadable formats so if your not hip to my back catalog make sure you check it out. Its been a long road thats lead me to this point as an artist and theres been many great moments along the way, I've been blessed to work with a plethora of amazingly talented artist & you'll quickly see that the bottom brick was laid long ago. I also have roughly 100 tracks sitting in the vault at this point from myself, Illogic & E Roc from L.E.S. Crew, Mr. Ridley, 2012 Dynasty, Etc. that I hope will see the light of day over the next 18 months. All I can say is keep a close eye on the music and store section, theres a lot to beautiful music yet to share and tie you all over till F.A.M. gets here.
   The photography & video sections have also been updated with new images. A huge thankyou goes out to Star in The Sky, Hellophoto & Chad Parker for all their hard work and help. I'm currently working on 3 new videos and will try and keep the pics as fresh as I can. I've linked my Evo to the site and I can add new photos anytime which I think is just beyond cool.

So wether you heard from a friend, caught a show, read a review, watched a video or just happened to float by I'm glad you've landed safely and hope you find something here that sets you free. AaronEvansImaginagtion.com aims to capture all of the wild, crazy, and creative ideas running through this beautiful disaster I call my mind. At this point I work in so many mediums and juggle so many hats that having a home-base for my solo music career, art & thoughts about the world in general has become a must. I'm still plan to continue my work with both The Green Brothers and Dove Ink but for the forceable future my solo career will be the focus....so with that said....

Some of you may know I'm finishing up my debut album F.A.M. (Family Always Matters). I'm not letting the cat out of the bag just yet but I hope to have a release date and final art by the end of the month. You can see a sneak peak of the cover at the top of the page...

Honestly theres so much going on that theres no way to fill you all in with only one post, but hey thats why I started this site, all good things come with time right? ;)
